Alcohol addiction is a chronic relapsing disorder associated with compulsive alcohol drinking, the loss of control over intake, and the emergence of a negative emotional state when alcohol is no longer available.
Alcohol use disorder symptoms focus on changes in your mood and behavior, including:
Craving beverages containing alcohol.
Continuing to use these beverages even though your drinking affects your relationships with your family, friends and colleagues.
Drinking more than you intended, or for longer than you intende
Health care providers consider your drinking medically unsafe when you drink: You are a man of legal drinking age who has 15 or more drinks a week, or often has 5 or more drinks at a time. You are a woman of legal drinking age who has 8 or more drinks a week, or often has 4 or more drinks at a time.
Withdrawal can begin as early as six to 12 hours after the last drink. Symptoms peak at two to three days, although they can last up to seven days. A subacute withdrawal syndrome may last for weeks, characterized by insomnia, irritability and craving.
